Premier Dalton McGuinty regrets that he is unable to personally attend and speak at the third annual CleanTech North Conference and Awards event. In his place we are very excited to have Minister Duguid address the CleanTech North community in his new role as Minister of Economic Development and Innovation. He will be joined by the selected CleanTechNorth cluster members to present the 2011 CTN Awards. Seven companies have been selected for awards this year, including the newly created CleanTech North Innovation Partner Award.
The event is targeted at senior executives, investors, and stakeholders interested in developing successful, world-class clean technology companies in Canada. The agenda will feature insight and discussion from leading cleantech practitioners and influencers, as well as the announcement of the 2011 CTN Companies, Company of the Year, and Innovation Partner of the Year.

Session 1 – Funding Cleantech in Canada
The economy and and venture financing have faced challenging times in recent years. In this environment Emerald Technology Ventures have been a consistent player and BDC and OMERS in the last year have made major announcements with respect to cleantech investing. Hear three leaders in these organizations discuss the opportunities for cleantech.
David Pamenter, Partner, Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP
David Pamenter is the National Leader of Gowlings’ Technology Industry Group and co-leader of Gowlings’ Cleantech Group which assists cleantech companies in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, licensing and distribution, environmental, tax, employment, privacy, intellectual property, government relations and regulatory affairs, and other legal issues facing today’s cleantech companies. He specializes in business law and practices in the Toronto office. He has more than thirty years of experience in private financings (including venture capital financings), M&A and technology licensing. David is active in the Intellectual Property, International Law and Small Business Committees of the Section of Business Law of the ABA.
Geoff Catherwood, BDC Venture Capital
Geoff is a registered professional engineer and has 14 years of experience in industrial automation and process control and over 10 years of venture capital experience. Prior to joining BDC Venture Capital in 2001, he worked for Bailey Canada and Asea Brown Boveri — large multi-national industrial process automation suppliers. He has diverse operational experience in the process automation industry, including field service, system commissioning, engineering, management, and sales.
Geoff administers BDC Venture Capital’s Energy and Cleantech portfolio in Western Canada. He is active on the boards of a number of early stage companies, including D-Wave Systems Inc., Teradici Corporation, Sutus Inc. (http://www NULL.sutus NULL.com/), Switch Materials (http://www NULL.switchmaterials NULL.com/) and General Fusion. He also volunteers in a number of programs promoting entrepreneurship, including New Ventures B.C. – an annual business plan competition.
Geoff holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia and an Executive MBA from Simon Fraser University. He has also completed the Canadian Securities Course.
Sid Paquette, OMERS Ventures
Sid Paquette is a Senior Associate at OMERS Ventures and is responsible for contributing to the identification and execution of investment opportunities for OMERS Ventures in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) sectors. Prior to joining OMERS Ventures, Sid was a senior manager in the international tax practice of Deloitte, as well as the Ontario Clean Tech leader for Deloitte and a member of its TMT executive team. Prior to Deloitte, Sid was called to the Bar of Ontario and worked for one of Canada’s leading corporate law firms. Sid has over a decade of experience providing business, tax and legal advisory services to high-growth companies in the TMT sectors. He has specialized in providing M&A advice to Canadian and foreign-based multinational corporations, as well as developing and implementing innovative intellectual property strategies.
Sid holds a B.A. from York University, J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and an MTax from the University of Waterloo.
Whitney Rockley, Emerald Technology Venture
Based in Toronto, Whitney Rockley is a Partner with Emerald Technology Ventures and is focused on industrial technology investments within the clean technology sector. Whitney currently serves as the Chair of Arxx Corporation, Director of TerraLUX Inc. and Senscient Inc.. Whitney has sixteen years of investment, operating, environment and strategic planning experience in the energy and water sector. Prior to joining Emerald, Whitney was a partner at Nomura New Energy & Clean Technology Ventures in London and the Director of Venture Capital at EPCOR, a large energy and water company. In addition to completing many of Canada’s first carbon trades, Whitney’s successes were recognized in 2007 when she was named as one of the top 10 women in Cleantech.

Session 2 – Leaving your Own Back Yard
Robinson & Cole moderate this session of members from CleanTech North’s partner network revealing new and updated perspectives for companies wishing to expand in the USA and Europe. Cleantech, sustainability and energy self-sufficiency remain high priorities as many states have created sector specific initiatives and legislation to encourage economic development based on clean and green solutions. Michael Wirvin, Robinson & LLP
Michael Wirvin is a partner in the firm’s Business Section and a primary member of the Business Transactions Practice Group, where his practice includes the representation of domestic and international clients in transactions involving mergers, asset and stock acquisitions, private placements, public offerings, commercial secured financings, joint ventures, and other financial transactions. Mr. Wirvin also has significant experience working with private equity and venture capital clients, at both the fund and portfolio company levels. In addition to representation in connection with financing and acquisition transactions, he often advises these clients on matters relating to corporate organization, capitalization, debt structuring, governance, and executive compensation. His company clients include early stage start-ups as well as larger, well-established public and private companies and joint ventures.
Mr. Wirvin focuses a significant amount of his work on cross-border transactions and provides both transactional and general corporate advice to clients in Canada and in other countries. His Canadian clients include large multinationals, Canadian public companies, major Canadian banks, and closely held CBCA and provincial corporations. Before joining Robinson & Cole in May 2000, Mr. Wirvin practiced corporate and merger and acquisition law in Canada. He received his LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick and his B.Sc. from St. Francis Xavier University. Mr. Wirvin is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; New Brunswick, Canada; and Nova Scotia, Canada.
Julian Brown, PricewaterhouseCoopers
Julian Brown is a partner in the Consulting and Deals practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP working in the Toronto office. He leads the Canadian Corporate Finance group.
Julian is responsible for a team of more than 50 mergers and acquisitions, debt, and real estate advisory professionals located across Canada who focus on finance raising and corporate transactions. Julian has more than 20 years’ experience in deal origination and execution in Europe, primarily in London and Madrid. During this time he’s advised clients ranging from large, publicly listed multinationals to family-owned businesses on their M&A and financing transactions in a wide range of sectors. Most recently, Julian spent seven years building up and then running PwC Spain’s Corporate Finance unit, taking that business from a zero base to a successful cross-sector team of 25 investment banking professionals focused on deals typically in the US$50 million to US$1 billion range.
Pedram Mokrian, Mayfield Fund
Pedram Mokrian focuses on investments in the Energytech sector, where his core expertise lies in the intersection of the energy, technology and services domains. He has served as a board observer on CPower (acquired by Constellation Energy).
Prior to Mayfield he spent time on the commodities trading desk at Credit Suisse and held positions at Ford Motor Company, JDS Uniphase and Nortel Networks, broadly covering the areas of power generation, fiber-optics and hardware development.
Pedram is actively involved with and recognized for his domain expertise within the energy community. He currently serves on the board of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Young Professionals in Energy, the membership committee for the US Association for Energy Economics, and is a Charter member of C100, where he co-leads the Cleantech practice. In addition, he is an active contributor to the Energy Policy Task Force at the Hoover Institute.
Pedram holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University with a focus on Energy Finance and Economics, and during his tenure was involved with the founding of the Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency.
Kathleen Porter, Robinson & Cole
Kathleen Porter is an intellectual property and technology partner in the Business Transactions Practice, resident in the Boston office, and former chair of the Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group. Ms. Porter counsels clients on the development, protection, and commercialization of intellectual property and technology and has extensive experience in structuring and negotiating sophisticated domestic and international license agreements, acquisitions, partnering arrangements, strategic alliances, and business opportunities for precision manufacturing, life science, software, Internet and e-commerce, and other technology-driven businesses.
As part of her practice, Ms. Porter counsels clients on competition compliance and regulatory issues, including price restraints and discrimination, volume discounts, MAP and other pricing programs, territorial and exclusive licensing restrictions, joint buying programs, and other trade association or group activities, consumer protection, promotions and advertising, and dealer terminations. She also counsels clients on competition law compliance, including the preparation of competition law premerger filings, and coordinates the preparation of foreign competition law filings. Ms. Porter provides advice and guidance regarding import/export control issues, including compliance and enforcement issues.
Ms. Porter is an editor and contributing author of e-counsel: The Executive’s Legal Guide to Electronic Commerce, published by Robinson & Cole. Most recently, Ms. Porter contributed materials on intellectual property issues for the American Bar Association’s (ABA) 2008 Business Section Spring Meeting in Dallas for a program entitled “The Series A Financing — Beyond the Standard Venture Financing Documents.” Ms. Porter has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® in the area of Information Technology Law since 2009 (Copyright 2011 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, SC).

Rick Huijbregts, Cisco Canada
As Vice President, Smart + Connected Communities, Rick Huijbregts leads the development of Cisco Canada’s Smart + Connected Communities practice including Smart + Connected Real Estate. Huijbregts is responsible for accelerating the growth of this industry in Canada.
In his previous role at Cisco, Huijbregts served as Vice President of Vertical Sales where he led a national team focused on developing sales practices and building solutions for industry-specific markets. Prior to this he was responsible for business development of Cisco’s real estate sector in the United States, Canada, and Emerging Markets regions. He started at Cisco in 2005 as a member of Cisco’s corporate real estate team.
Prior to joining Cisco, Huijbregts was executive director of the Center for Design Informatics at the Harvard Design School. He was also cofounder and CEO of Edificium Inc. and consulted for international clients AEW Capital, McGraw-Hill Construction, Aukett Architects, and Capital Planning Technologies.
Huijbregts holds a bachelor’s degree in construction management from the Tilburg Polytechnical University in the Netherlands, a master’s degree in real estate development and project management from Delft University in the Netherlands, and a doctorate from Harvard University with a specialization in real estate technology and investment management.
Huijbregts lives with his wife and two sons in Markham, Ontario (Canada).
Emily Moore, Hatch
Emily Moore is Hatch’s Director of Technology Development and has 15 years of experience in industrial R&D. Hatch is a Canadian based firm offering engineering and consulting services to the mining and minerals, energy and infrastructure sectors. At Hatch, Emily is responsible for the identification of new technology investment opportunities and technology portfolio management including project development, technology transfer, industry-university partnerships and intellectual property management.
Before coming to Hatch in 2008, Emily worked for 11 years at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada delivering Xerox’s chemical toner technology from laboratory to market. At Xerox, Emily was directly involved in research management and technology partnership development. Emily served as a member of the Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Advisory Board on University Industry Grants. Emily holds a Bachelor Degree in Engineering Chemistry from Queen’s University and a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry from Oxford University, where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar.
